Becoming a Health Coach changed my life in so many ways. Ten 10 years ago when I made this decision, one could have labeled me crazy, but I will say it was one of my best decisions.
In 2010, I was a successful Telecoms executive with responsibilities in 30 Caribbean countries. I was often on a plane, from country to country. It was fun, exciting, and high pressure all at the same time. I truly loved technology, yep I have the degrees to prove it (Bachelors in Computer Science and Masters in MIS). It was also in that year that I recognized that many of my colleagues were getting ill, highly stressed, and were rapidly aging. I knew I did not want to walk the same path as they did.
I was always encouraging my colleagues to be balanced, through self-care, exercise, and eating right. I had my AHA moment at senior management retreat, at the Strawberry Hills Jamaica Luxury Resort. I am not surprised it happened at that location, it is nestled in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica and simply breathing taking (natures paradise). It was my time to present and the director made a dig at me about starting a health company because I chose to skip the desserts offered that day. Unbeknown to him, his words were exactly what I needed.
It was shortly after that meeting I began to feel out of place. I remember going through the motions. I was no longer excited about taking those long flights, nor was I excited to go to another MTV meeting to discuss music content contracts, this was truly a shift!
One day I decided to look for a place to educate myself more on health & wellness and I came across the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). I was ecstatic to learn there was a place for me, and slowly my fire and passion reignited.
I didn't hesitate to sign up because the moment I saw the curriculum and the role of a health coach, I knew immediately that was the right fit. Back then when you signed up with IIN you got the classes on an iPod. The lessons were modular and pre-recorded. They were ahead of their time, you would log into the forums and interact with other classmates on the weekly lessons. I was so moved by their mission, I interned at their Manhattan office and wow, wow, wow. The lunches and massages, I digressed.
It's 10 years later not only am I a Board Certified Health Coach but I am also now a Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist. (another Master of Science) and most importantly I have remained a faithful ambassador to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition that gave me my start. There's so much more I want to share but...It's too much. Just know I went on to teach a few classes at IIN and spoke at a few of their conferences. I was also a forum moderator and student Coach. Since then I have worked on some amazing projects including working to help soldiers (worked in the US Army Wellness Center) in Germany and now resident Clinical Nutritionist at one of their facilities in Louisiana. While my story is incredible, believe me, that there are a whole tribe and a community filled with persons like myself. If you are like me and love to serve, you have a burning desire to help people to get healthy, enjoy making the healthiest, tastiest foods, enjoy researching health and wellness then you are a HEALTH COACH at heart!. All you need is the credentials! I got my training and start with a community of like-minded people, many of whom are doing amazing things. The Institute for Integrative Nutrition changed my life, will you let it change yours too? If you would like to ask me any questions, feel free to email me at rese@resecarter.com I would be happy to answer your questions about becoming not just any health coach but an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach.
